Caco-2 Research & Cytogration Systems

The Caco-2 cell line provides an extremely efficient means of screening large numbers of combinatorial pharmaceutical candidates by its ability to model intestinal absorption in humans, and to do so with minimal amounts of compound.

Growing Caco-2 membranes, however, is an exacting and labor intensive process, requiring a sterile, carefully controlled environment. The need for feeding every two days and maintenance of cells throughout the 21-day growth period increases the likelihood of contamination, which in turn can render membranes unsuitable for permeability assessment.

By automating all phases of the process, Cytogration systems are able to produce large quantities of consistently good membranes in a constantly monitored environment with minimal intervention, thereby reducing contamination and improving yield.

The combined efficiencies of Cytogration systems and the inherent advantages of Caco-2 research are expected to significantly increase the number of chemical candidates that can be screened and, in the process, dramatically speed drug development.
